The Reading variant was published as Take a Ride on the Reading, by Alan Moon, in The General, volume 23, number 6, and in the Train Gamer's Gazette, volume 2, number 4.  I do not have the article, but have included the map:

The Coalfields variant was published as Take a Ride on the Reading, by Alan Moon, in Games International, number 6, and in the Train Gamer's Gazette, volume 2, number 2.  The article also includes rules for combining the Reading and Coalfields variants.  I do not have the article, but have included the maps:

There are other variants, including a Wabash variant, whose origin and details I don't know.
